Registration is on!!
Although it still feels "winter-ish" out there, registration is now on at most Softball BC Parks on the South Island. Girls and Boys programs are offered for players aged 6 to 19 from Saltspring Island and Sidney to Sooke and Oak Bay to Duncan and everywhere in-between on the South Island. Check for the park nearest you.

All of our local associations are members of Softball BC and Softball Canada. These are recognized by the Provincial and Federal Governments Sports Ministries. We are committed to:
  • the National Coaching Certification Program to ensure that our players receive the best coaching and instruction possible
  • providing umpires with the Softball Canada Umpire Certification while encouraging and providing opportunities for our youth to officiate. Several of our trainers and senior umpires have experience at Canadian and World Championships in minor and adult divisions
  • providing a fun softball program for players at ALL skill levels: from beginners and recreational to future Team Canada players

What our Program offers
There is some confusion between our Softball programs and those offered by Little League Victoria and Community Recreation Centres. Here's some facts:
  • we have 14 Associations offering Softball throughout the south island: Duncan to Oak Bay, Sooke to Sidney and everywhere in-between
  • we have about 100 Associations throughout the Province from Terrace and Fort St John to the Kootenay's to Campbell River, Nanaimo, Port Alberni . . .
  • our Provincial Championships are typically attended by more than 40 teams in each division (U12, U14, U16, and U19) in 3 levels of play each year
  • our older divisions have Western and Canadian Championships where all 10 provinces often compete (and Territories sometimes)
  • while we strongly support competitive players and teams, sixty percent or more of our teams are classed as "C" (recreational) and they all have a chance of attending Provincial Championships against teams in their classification
  • our "A" teams - we have 1 or 2 teams per division on the South Island - compete at Canada Cup Futures Tournament, and against top teams from the Lower Mainland, Washington State, and beyond - many of those players go on to play at the College/University level
  • we offer an optional "Fall Ball" program that encourages participation and fun . . . in short, Softball is our game and we love it!!

So, if registering your player for the first time, check with your local Softball BC Association. Ask what age groups are offered, ask if they offer pre-season instruction for new players, and consider getting involved!
Our "entry" programs
When a child is ready to play in an organized environment: occasionally at 5 years but more likely at 6 or 7 years, they begin with our Learn to Play Program (LTP). Many of us have coached T-Ball and other "entry" programs and this program "blows the doors off" other programs. It makes the learning of sport generally - and softball in particular - a fun, worthwhile experience.

LTP is broken into 3 levels: Level 1, 2, and Mites. Level 1 is strictly skill development and fun - no softball games but games and contests that encourage learning the skills of the game. When players are ready, they move on to LTP Level 2 which continues to teach skills and introduces games against other teams. Level 3 (Mites) is usually for 10 year olds and advanced 9 year olds and includes games against other parks (and continues the skill development that the LTP program offers).

Our 12 and under program is called Squirts. While mostly made up of 11 and 12 year olds, some advanced 10 year olds (sometimes 9) find this to be a good level for them. Here, we have C teams (recreational), B teams (competitive), and A (Rep). Typically on the South Island we have 15-20 C teams, 5-8 B teams, and 1 Squirt A team.

2010 High School Softball

Interested in playing Softball against other Victoria High Schools?  This is the time you should be asking your school's Athletic Director about fielding a team for this year's league.  League games are played after school, like other school sports, so it shouldn't conflict with your club team.  If you want to play high school softball, don't assume your school will field a team.....ask about one!

2010 Bantam Girls Canadian Fastpitch Championships

Victoria will be host to the 2010 Bantam Nationals at View Royal's Centennial Park from July 31 to August 4.  The event will be one of the biggest of it's kind.  We are hoping that the softball community can help us put on a great show for the rest of Canada to witness.  We are well on our way with the planning but we are now asking for volunteers to help make these championships a success.  If you are interested in helping out, please sign up for a volunteer position.  Our volunteer sign up form is located on our Nationals website:

Marisa Litster on Team Canada
ImageIt has been several years since a player from Vancouver Island has made Team Canada.

Marisa Litster began her softball career with Sidney Little League and moved to Central Saanich Extreme Peewee B in 2000. As a Peewee and Bantam she helped her teams win many games and 2 Silver medals at BC's as a Bantam B. In 2004 she moved on to the new Island Devils Midget A team and, as a Midget and Junior, won several awards and Gold medals. She has played for Brenau University in Georgia for the past 4 years where, besides receiving a Bachelor of Nursing and an RN, received 2008 Conference All Academic Team, 2007 1st Team All Conference Selection, 2007 Conference All Academic Team, 2006 1st Team All Conference Selection, 2006 Conference All Freshman Team . . . in 2008 Softball BC recognized Marisa as the Senior Athlete of the Year.

Marisa is now a member of Team Canada and is now playing at Canada Cup, off to the World Championships in Oklahoma in mid-July and hopefully the Pan-Am Games in Venezuela in August.

Way to go Marisa!!

SVI softball now has a Facebook group! It's an opportunity for players, coaches, officials - even umpires, to share some announcements, favourite ball stories, . . .

While we'd prefer the focus to be on minor ball, we'd like to hear from those that are still involved with the game as adults.
